Despite the continuing popularity of luxury SUVs, don’t count on the BMW 7 Series going away any time soon. This is the brand’s traditional expression of upscale motoring that offers the well-heeled buyer – among other things – two ways to get 600 hp.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
With a new model rumoured to be on the way next year, the 2022 BMW 7 Series is unchanged.
Available Trims
BMW offers the 7 Series in 750i, 750Li 745Le, Alpina B7, and M760Li trims. The “L” designation indicates a long wheelbase that adds rear-seat legroom. 750i and Alpina B7 are powered by V8s, the 745Le is a six-cylinder plug-in hybrid, and M760Li has a V12. All are standard with AWD and an eight-speed transmission.
Standard Features
Among the 7 Series’ standard items are remote engine start, heated steering wheel, passive keyless entry, soft-close doors, sunroof, rear-window sun shade, front and rear heated seats, four-zone A/C, ambient lighting, adaptive LED headlights, head-up display, and wireless phone charging.
The 750i’s safety kit comprises automatic high beams, lane departure alert, lane change warning, forward collision mitigation, and forward pedestrian detection.
Key Options
A dynamic handling package brings four-wheel steering and active comfort suspension with road preview.
The premium package adds ventilated front seats, ceramic controls, traffic jam assistant, thermally insulated glass, parking assistant plus, surround view cameras, massaging seats, ambient air, power sun shades, and the BMW display key. In LWB cars, this group also includes a panoramic roof.
In long-wheelbase models, an exclusive lounge 1 package adds heated armrests, rear-seat touchscreen, and ventilated comfort rear seats with massage. A tier 2 lounge pack gets a two-seat rear compartment, including extra-special accommodations in the right-rear position.
Fuel Economy
BMW’s fuel consumption estimates for the 7 Series are 14.0/9.7 L/100 km (city/highway) for the 750i and Alpina B7, and 17.8/11.9 L/100 km M760Li guise. Ratings for the plug-in 745Le are 12.2/9.1 L/100 km when running as a gas-electric hybrid, and 4.2 Le/100 km when using the car’s 27 km of electric range.
Competition
The 7 Series runs in a fancy crowd that includes the Audi A8 and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. You might also consider it a “budget” alternative to ultra-posh sedans from Bentley and Rolls-Royce.
